What Golfbird does
Golfbird uses the iPhone's rear camera to follow the clubhead and compute club speed, club path and angle of attack. The optional Mac app receives each shot from your iPhone and computes its ball flight. Both apps are free. They have no account system, no sign-in and no Golfbird server.
Camera and video
The iPhone app records with the rear camera at up to 120 frames per second. All video processing happens on the iPhone, and video frames are never uploaded anywhere. An optional slow-motion replay clip of your last swing is written to the phone's temporary storage for playback only.
What passes between your iPhone and your Mac
When you pair the two apps, the iPhone sends your own Mac a small shot record over your local network (Bonjour, service _golfbird._tcp): the club, club speed, attack angle, path, face angle, smash factor and a timestamp. The Mac sends the computed ball-flight numbers back. Nothing goes over the internet, and there is no Golfbird server for it to go to.
Optional: sending shots to GSPro
The Mac app can forward each real swing to GSPro's open connector on a PC that you name on your own network. This is off by default. When you turn it on, the shot data goes only to the PC you named.
What is stored, and where
Shot history, stats, your profile and achievements, and app settings are stored locally on each device, in the app's own storage. Deleting the app deletes them. The iPhone app can export your shots as a CSV file; you choose whether and where to share it, and the destination you pick handles it from there.
Sharing and tracking
Golfbird contains no ads, no analytics and no third-party SDKs, and it does not track you. No shot data, video or personal information is sent to us. Because nothing reaches us, there is no copy for us to retain or delete.
Demo mode
Both apps have a Demo mode that flies sample shots synthesized from Golfbird's ball-flight model. Demo shots are labelled as demo shots and are never saved.
Permissions
- Camera (iPhone): used to follow the clubhead during a swing.
- Local Network (iPhone): used only to find and talk to your own Mac running Golfbird.
- Notifications (iPhone, optional): a local practice-streak reminder. Golfbird asks only after you finish a session, the reminder is scheduled on the device, and there is no push server.
Children
Golfbird isn't directed at children under 13. The apps have no account and send nothing to us, so we don't receive information from anyone who uses them, children included.
